I have never heard about Goji, or Wolfberry before. What is it?
The Latin name of wolfberry is Lycium barbarum fruit. Chinese name is Gou Qi (Ji) Zi or Gou Qi Berry.Gojiis the popular Western spelling, pronounced Go Gee. It is a common Chinese herb and medicinal food. The wolfberry bush grows in the northwest part of China. The fruit has been known for promoting visual acuity and general health since ancient times. People suffering from failing eyesight, diabetes, anemia, tinnitus, and general debility due to consumptive diseases will benefit most from the berry. It is often used in tonic formulas, teas, and chicken soup. Many people chew them like raisins because of their pleasant taste.

What are the main nutrients in wolfberry?
There are several important types of  nutrients in wolfberry:
1. Wolfberry signature nutrient is Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides (LBP). Chinese researchers have put much attention on focusing on LBP for past 30 years. There have been 1000 papers related to LBP which might be good source for modulating immunity and anti-oxidant compounds.
2. The carotenoids and zeaxanthin in Rich NatureTMWolfberry provide essential nutrients for the eyes. Dr. Dietmar Breithaupt and his research team have found that Rich Nature Wolfberry contains alsmost exclusively zeaxanthin dipalmitate (ca. 150mg /100grams). Rich NatureTMWolfberry also contains between 26,000 and 28,000 IU/100g beta-carotene.
3. Rich NatureTMWolfberry contains 19 amino acids including all 8 essential amino acids (amino acids which must be obtained from food). More than half of the amino acids are free or water soluble, and can be directly utilized by the body.
4. Besides the above three main nutrients, wolfberry also has about 20 trace minerals, fiber, protein (about 11%-13%), Betaine, Flavonoids, Vitamins A, B, C, etc

Who should take wolfberry?
Everyone can take wolfberry on daily basis for general health.  However, people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems, eye conditions, or weak joints and legs will likely benefit the most from eating wolfberry, particularly patients undergoing anti-cancer treatment and patients with diabetic retinopathy. Wolfberry is not for treating disease; instead, its main health benefit is to nourish our body. In Chinese medicine means to support your body whenever it suffers from illness or weakness.

What kind of eye conditions will wolfberry improve?
Chinese medicine uses wolfberry to treat or prevent visual degeneration, such as cataracts, retinopathy, or age related macular degeneration.  One report from the Department of Ophthalmology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong demonstrated that carotenoids in wolfberry had a high affinity for the retina.  Affinity means the nutrients in wolfberry showed a high concentration in the retina after ingestion and absorption by the body. Another study on 44 patients with diabetic retinopathy showed that wolfberry significantly improved conditions that cause retinopathy.

I have heard that Wolfberry could enhance sexual well-being, is it true?
Yes. Chinese Wolfberry has been shown to facilitate the conversion of human growth hormone (HGH) into insulin growth factor-one (IGF-1). IGF-1 is the hormone responsible for the growth and development of the bodys connective tissues. The penis is made of collagen and is surrounded by a layer of fibrous connective tissue. Wolfberry by helping to keep blood glucose levels low promotes the conversion of HGH to IGF-1 in the liver and stimulates the growth of these connective tissue cells. It causes the bodys pituitary gland to release human growth hormones, while stimulating the testes and adrenal glands to secrete male sex hormones known as androgens directly into the bloodstream.  In a study of 64 cases, the content LPO in the serum of the patients treated was obviously decreased, the contents of vitamin C and the activities of SOD were markedly increased compared with control group. The difference between two groups was statistic significant (P< 0.001).

How long do I need to eat wolfberry before I get the benefits?
You may take wolfberry everyday and stay with it as long as you wish. How long it takes before benefits start to show depends on how an individual reacts to wolfberry. Many Chinese eat wolfberry on a regular basis. Wolfberry really can improve your health in the long run.

If I am allergic to berries, would I also be allergic to wolfberry?
There have been no reported cases of allergy in China or in the U.S.  However, to be cautious, you may want to consult to your doctors.
The goji berry is part of the nightshade family of plants which also include potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. If you are allergic to any of the nightshades, which is quite common, you may have problems with goji berries.

Is there any wolfberry grown in America?
Wolfberry has been grown in China for thousands of years. America did not grow any wolfberries before. However, some American* people have tried to grow wolfberries in the United States in the past couple of year. Some of them might get some results. But the American berries have not commercialized and nobody has ensured the nutrients. China has done extensive research on wolfberries including nutrients and clinical trials in the past 30 years. The scientific papers have been published in China, Hong Kong and some Asian countries, even in European countries. Wolfberry is very new for most of American people.

What are the polysaccharides?
The word Poly stands for Multi or combined and the saccharine are for sugar type molecules. Basically the work of energy transfer is done by the glucose in the body. The food converted in glucose gives the power to the cells. Polysaccharides are found in Goji berry juice in certain extant that it increases the efficiency of working.
